The Sheerness County Youth Club and Activity Centre

Introduction

Youth Clubs come in all shapes and sizes. Television often portrays them as run down scruffy places, where young people hang out, but in the '90s things have changed. They are now becoming high tech with up-to-date facilities to meet the needs of the modern teenager.

Our Centre in Sheerness is probably one of the best equipped Centres in Kent, with a warm friendly atmosphere where you will feel safe and be safe, where you will have a wide range of activites to choose from and the chance to meet other young people and make new friends.

Our staff team aim to provide you with the very best service. A place where you will be treated as an individual, not just one of the crowd.

We have members who joined at the age of 13 and stayed until 20!

No one stays 8 years at a Club unless it is good, and because we cater for older members the programme is professional with always something new to do. It is certainly not kids' stuff, but at the same time you don't have to be particularly good at anything to take part.

Remember.

Words sound Good.

Photos look Good.

But you need to visit the Club to realise that it is Good.

Look forward to seeing you there.

The Centre has its own internal radio station called 'Radio Coastline' providing background music programmes for the Centre. Programmes are recorded on tape from a selection of over 3,000 records and C.D.s. If you are interested in radio D.J. presenting, we will train you. Then you may want to move on to become a Disco D.J. at the Centre's Friday Entertainment Night.

'Radio Coastline' has its own studio with C.D. and record decks and mixer. The disco unit also has C.D. decks and mixer, with sound to light and rope lights.

Stage Mime

The idea of miming on stage was introduced to the Centre many years ago. This activity is very popular. Anyone can back a mimer on stage, gaining confidence, you can then move on to become a lead mimer.

The Centre has a make-up room with a wide range of costumes, also a stage with lighting and musical instruments. Rehearsals are held on a Wednesday evening and the best mime acts are performed on the Friday Entertainment Night, once a year 20 of the best acts are put together for the Annual Mime Show.

Dance

There are several dance sessions a week held in the Centre's dance studio. You can start with the basics and move into stage at the Friday Entertainment Night.

The Centre's annual Mime shows and the shows staged around the Island give opportunities for the keen dancers to present their polished performances in front of an audience.

Drama

The drama group meets once a week, acting out a range of exciting sketches and role play situations. Here's your chance to step into a different character and act out an imaginary scene.

The drama sessions can lead to all osrts of opportunities; like becoming a T.V. presenter on one of the many County T.V.programmes and the possibility of playing a role in a T.V. drama production.

Art

Art is one of the more leisurely activities in the Centre. We provide you with a wide range of equipment in the art cupboard for sketching, etc. You can have your own art book and draw while you are waiting for another activity to start. Special art sessions are held which include: badge making/design/modelling/printing, etc..

Video

The Centre has its own Video Unit called 'County Television Productions'. This unit provides the members of the Centre with a Television presentation every six weeks. This presentation is comprised of several programmes, each programme having its own presenters and camera crews, giving you the option of either presenting a programme or becoming part of the technical team. The Centre has a well equipped T.V. studio and editing facilities with regular training courses giving you the opportunity to obtain the skills of video production. We are also out and about on location making videos for the community and for the Centre.

Pool

The popular activity of Pool is available on most evenings and afternoon clubs. The Centre has two tables for Pool or Snooker. For the more experienced players we offer a green snooker card to play on the main table. You can take part in the pool ratings. This activity is included in the Centre's Championships.

Table Tennis

If you have ever wanted to play table tennis, here's your chance. The Youth Centre has two professional table tennis tables and a member of staff always willing to give you coaching. You can either play a friendly game or play in the Centre's own ratings. If you become a table tennis player you will have manu opportunities to play in competitions, as part of a team. You will also have the chance to take part in the Centre's own Championships.

Multi-Sports

The Centre has a very strong Multi-Sports activity group. The idea is to cover a wide range of sports. This activity uses all available sporting facilities on the Island and around Kent.

There are Girls and Boys sporting activities which can lead to away competitions and the Centre's own Summer Olympics.

5-a-side football still features as a main sporting activity.

Chess

If you are interested in any of the table games like: Chess, Draughts, Dominoes and Cards, etc., you can play these games at any time. Special chess sessions are provided on one night a week. This activity is included in the Championships.
